Amplitude Modulated Water Communication
Frequency and Amplitude Modulated Wave-Maker
Most wireless communication systems are designed using some form of electromagnetic radiation. What if you build a communication system with water waves? We answered this question by implementing an Amplitude Modulated communication system using a mechanical wave-maker we designed which is capable of being modulated in both frequency and amplitude.
Because capillary waves are very small, we detected the waves generated by the wave-maker by reflecting a laser off the surface of the water, and analyzing the perturbations in the laser beam's position using image analysis in openCV. We successfully transmitted data with our system, with an extremely high SNR and no observed data loss (although we didn't send very much data).
