Eye Robot
A lot of people are unable to visit colleges for various reasons, and our team of Eric Miller, Arpan Rau, Jonah Spear and I wanted to make sure that our school was accessible to anyone with an internet connection. We designed, built and programmed a telepresence robot which is remote controllable over a WIFI connection. One of our goals was to make the robot pleasant to interact with and pleasant to use. If people interacting with the robot find it cute, we can mask the mechanical nature of it in a way and avoid creepy. A lot of design work went in to making sure the robot had the right aesthetics, and a lot of mechanical work went into making sure the robot could easily drive and look around.
We ensured that the robot could navigate various terrains encountered in the Library by using a tracked drive system, and made sure that the user could look around by actuating the head, and placing speakers as the eyes so the user could talk to people.
